25 years ago Chianti was a source for rather mediocre wines distributed in this big bottles (3 liters and more) people sampled as a souvernir for their party cellar. 10 years ago this picture has changed dramatically. Today the leading Sangiovese are among the best wines of the world IMO and a challenge for Bordeaux and Burgundy. A good example and still available for a very reasonable price: Felsina´s Fontalloro. But his is only an example – there is much more to discover.
I am proud of my wine cellar. It mirrors my love for the fine wines of France, Italy, Spain and Germany. Even the not so well informed people know that Bordeaux and Burgundy are very famous but often expensive wines also. Due to their price a lot of people have heard from this wines but never tasted them. We – the wine lovers – forget sometimes that a bottle for 25 Euros is very expensive for the majority of people. But does the "average" wine drinkers actually like Bordeaux, Burgundy or Barolo as much as the geeks? I mean the modern ones? Well - not really is my impression.
The vintage 2005 is known for it´s greatness all over France - and in some cases for crazy prices never seen and never expected before. What to do if you are a lover of Bordeaux wine? The old and wise men of Bordeaux gave always the advice – buy the little wines in the best years and the Grands Crus in the others. I made the experience long ago: Not a bad idea!
